Die Bibel in Mendelssohns Elias
Continuing Erich ReimerÕs analysis of MendelssohnÕs oratorio Elias, the author
makes a detailed comparison between the text and biblical sources. Alongside the main text taken
from I Kings 8 and 14 to II Kings 2 are a host of fragments,
including passages from II Kings 1 and those aimed at the New Testament. It is advisable
to distinguish between the evident absence of those passages that could refer
to John the Baptist or
Christ and the presence of those that subtly
mirror MendelssohnÕs own Christian convictions. Deuteronomy 6:4-5 appears to serve as the basis
for Elias; both verses
can be traced
and identified, while they are dispersed
without change between three numbers
(21, 16, and 8).
