Kateryna Shtryfanova: Kompositorische Strukturen der
Lautenfantasie als Gattung in der
1. HŠlfte des 16. Jahrhunderts*
Issues pertaining to the criteria governing the genre-specific
characteristics of the fantasia and its usage have remained relevant up to
today. The characteristics of the fantasia in the first half of the sixteenth
century, the period in which the genreÕs attributes were first formed, rests on
the particular understanding of this genre at that time, which was based on the
close relationship between genre, form, and compositional technique. Form as
process plays an important role in these earlier fantasias, which vividly
characterize this genreÕs compositional components through the variety and
combination of formal principles. This variety is evident on both the macro-
and micro level, in the principles of form themselves, and in the genreÕs
evolving organization (initial-, middle-, and final sections). A comparison of
the fantasiaÕs form in relation to other genres is also included. Independent
of a fantasiaÕs individual style, a constant dependence on vocal elements with
the incorporation of innovative instrumental features is found. A basic
convention of the fantasia is thus determined by a complicated yet organized
flexibility of form.
