†ber das Beginnen der Musik BŽla Bart—ks

Although beginnings and endings are Ňbasic categories of musical formÓ (H.H. Eggebrecht), musicology tends to overlook the topic of how a composition begins. The author will explore the strategies BŽla Bart—k uses to begin his works. Instrumental music from all genres between 1905 and 1945 has been selected, albeit only those works in which innovative compositional techniques are employed (peasant song adaptations, palindromes, compositions with musical quotes, compositions with single-voiced introductions). The results: 1) novel formal constructions call for unconventional solutions; 2) when dealing with the objets trouvŽs of peasants songs, openings follow a variety of formal schemes; 3) palindromes take into account the differing circumstances surrounding beginnings and endings; 4) a beginning with a (borrowed) quote suggests a crypto-religious program; and 5) a work that opens with a single-voiced introduction connotes a confessional quality, one that signals a change in Bart—kŐs compositional direction.
