MICHAEL CUSTODIS: Theodor W. Adorno und Joseph MŸller-Blattau: Strategische Partnerschaft

The collaboration between Adorno and Joseph MŸller-Blattau, reconstructed from their—until now, unexplored—correspondence, is for several reasons pertinent to the state of German musicology in the early 1960s. The prominent repatriateÕs coalition with a former high-ranking Nazi musicologist (Adorno knew of MŸller-BlattauÕs politically contaminated vita) not only trajects historical inconsistencies and contradictions. This alliance led to a controversy which is supported by exemplary source materials that document the status of academic musical discourse coincident with the upcoming generation of Carl Dahlhaus, Rudolf Stephan, and Hans Heinrich Eggebrecht.
