Martin Gimm: Eine Episode im Leben von Franz Liszt: Die
Familie Hans Conon von der Gabelentz in Altenburg
Thanks to newly discovered materials, ambiguities in
Franz LisztŐs biography from 1865 to 1867, marked by closer dealings with the
town Altenburg in Thuringia and the nearby village Poschwitz, can be clarified.
This information rests on unpublished family archives of the orientalist and
linguist Hans Conon v.d. Gabelentz, now available in the Thuringian State
Archives in Altenburg. LisztŐs musical interest in the Gabelentz family was
awakened through Hans CononŐs wife, the composer Henriette von Linsingen, who
was then known beyond the confines of their immediate region. The Kapellmeister
of the court in Altenburg, Friedrich Wilhelm Stade, a friend of LisztŐs since
their days in Jena, served as mediator between Liszt and Frau von Linsingen.
This article offers, in addition, the first provisional overview of her oeuvre,
which researchers have managed to neglect up to today.
