Linda Maria Koldau: Kompositorische Topoi als Kategorie fŸr die Analyse von Filmmusik

 

The essay introduces an approach to film music based on the identification of small-scale compositional structures and their semantic function. Various film examples illustrate how compositional topoi such as ostinati and the minor second are able to supply an important element in the overall expressive intention of a film scene. Although such a microanalysis of a sceneŐs specific elements must ultimately be placed within the context of a filmŐs overall structure, it proves helpful in the analysis of film music to examine them carefully with regard to their traditional compositional usage and to their relationship to semantics.
