Reinhold Brinkmann: Musikalische Lyrik, politische
Allegorie und die „heil’ge Kunst“. Zur Landschaft von Schuberts Winterreise*
This
article, belonging to a three-part study of Schubert’s Winterreise (“Der Lindenbaum,” “Mut,” and
“Der Leiermann” respectively), concerns itself with the political
dimension of Schubert’s song cycle, interpreting the cycle’s ending
in light of Schubert’s poem, “Klage an das Volk.” The
work’s conclusion serves as an example of Schubert’s compositional
realization of “holy art’s” (heilge Kunst) unique role in preserving the liberal ideas of the
“Zeit der Kraft und Tat” until a new age of freedom was able to
rise forth from its dormant state.
