On
the geography of ÒheterodoxÓ religiosity in contemporary Russia
Numerous
movements and world-views that are considered non-institutionalised, or ÒheterodoxÓ,
forms of religiosity in the current academic discussion spread in Russia after
the collapse of the communist system. Based on the results of a new
representative population survey, this paper will first look at spatial
disparities in the attitudes towards selected heterodox religious world-views
and the significance of the spatial context for these attitudes. At the
forefront will be the issue of the existence of disparities by hierarchy of the
settlement system, regional differences as well as the question how factors
like geographic mobility, the bond with a place of origin and the presence of
persons with the heterodox religious experiences in the social interaction
space of the individual might influence the individualÕs inclination to
personally turn to heterodox religiousness. Next, the paper will show how
places and regions can be used to legitimise heterodox religious knowledge.
Following that, it will illustrate the spatial distribution of destinations of
excursion workshops for followers of selected heterodox religious teachings and
will analyse the spatial distribution of the people participating in internet
forums on heterodox religious topics.
