Housing and action space: what role is played by lifestyle,
life situation and
spatial structure?
This
contribution presents theoretical considerations on the interconnections
between life situation, lifestyle, choice of location and activity spaces, as
well as empirical results on the basis of path analyses. The analyses are based
on data from a survey in seven study areas in the region of Cologne. The
results indicate that lifestyles influence activity spaces, particularly in
leisure time, even when the life situation is controlled. However, the impact
of life situation on activity spaces outweighs the impact of lifestyle. The
latter is primarily mediated by lifestyle-specific location requirements and
location decisions, which likewise influence travel behaviour.
