Discourse analysis in
human geography – Òstate of the artÓ
Discourse
analysis approaches have recently enjoyed considerable attention in
human-geographical research, especially among young scholars. After a phase of
relatively uncritical euphoria about the ÒdiscoveryÓ of these approaches, in
recent years a broad debate has evolved about conceptual and methodological
aspects and their implementation in empirical research projects. This article
outlines some of the most influential developments and discussions within this
field: Laclau and MouffeÕs theory of hegemony and FoucaultÕs concept of
governmentality as well as some reflections on the discursive constitution of
identities. The author comes to the conclusion that discourse theoretical
approaches are especially useful for the analysis of power relations and their
entanglement with issues of identity formation. Findings from ongoing research
projects are presented which identify ways in which these perspectives can be
employed in the investigation of the manifold relations between language,
power, and space.
