Linguistic communication through space – the potential of
systems theory
This
article examines the potential of the sociological systems theory developed by
Niklas Luhmann for the analysis of spaces constructed through language.
Following an analysis of the relationship between communication and language in
accordance with systems theory, space is conceptualized as a medium of both
communication and perception. The role played by (socially constructed) spatial
forms in the development of social structures thereby emerges as one of the key
issues in social geography. Following a discussion of the methodological
implications of this perspective, the final section illustrates its potential
using the example of the semantics of urban tourism and alternatives for its
analysis.
