Marc Redepenning, Jena: Die Moral der critical geopolitics
The morals
of critical geopolitics
In
political communication, places, regions, and states are often depicted by
reducing their geographical complexity in a variety of ways. The critical
geopolitics approach attempts to analyze these reductions and to challenge them
with political critique. In order to complete both of these tasks, critical
geopolitics draws on a wide range of theoretical orientations which are often
not mutually compatible. Consequently, several breaks which need further
discussion, mark the theoretical design of critical geopolitics. Critical geopolitics
employs two different strategies to bridge these breaks. The first can be
described as the attempt to incorporate moderate versions of originally more radical
theories; the second involves a recourse to notions of morality. This article
seeks to clarify the problems that emerge from incorporating different
theoretical strands from different scientific backgrounds, by discussing how
critical geopolitics adopts a deconstructive point of view. Finally, taking a
perspective inspired by theories of difference, several points are proposed to
avoid the problems described above. The authorŐs claim is that such a
perspective could be an alternative to the growing moralization of scientific
discussion.
