The fortunes of dispersed locations:
knowledge networks in the global firm
This paper argues that
geographical expansion and the locational split of an organization offers
opportunities to absorb new and diverse knowledge. At the same time it
challenges corporate cohesion necessary to circulate, reuse and recombine
localized knowledge in other locations. An empirical case study is used to map
and analyze a global network of interpersonal knowledge exchange. Methods of
social network analysis are used to explore the connectivity and vulnerability
of knowledge flow between the local offices in a medium-sized global technology
service firm. Finally, the analysis illustrates the effectiveness of different
management interventions to enhance long-term exchange of expertise between the
local sites of a globally operating firm.
