RŠumliche MobilitŠt im Kontext des sozialen Wandels: eine Typologie multilokalen Wohnens

Spatial mobility in the context of social change: A typology of multi-local residence

The issue of ãmulti-localityÓ refers to the practice of households using more than one place of residence. It has emerged recently in late-modern societies, driven by specialised labour markets, a more complex pattern of family life or by long-distance leisure habits. This phenomenon is highly differentiated, depending on household organisation, motivation, the frequency of moves, or distance and travel time between residences. It is also possible to differentiate between conditions that trigger multi-locality (voluntary decisions vs. external constraints) and the specific relationship between residences (equal vs. hierarchical). In this context the paper develops a typology of multi-local residence. Its core subject is the mutual interdependence between multi-locality (choice of location) and spatial mobility. As a consequence of multi-local residence, on the one hand, particular forms of travel behaviour tend to emerge. On the other hand, high speed-transport infrastructure, motorisation and ãlow costÓ air travel have set the stage for multi-locality. The paper suggests that both site selection and the practice of mobility are melting into multi-local ways of life in general. It is also likely that the ongoing division of labour as well as the increasing dynamics of social and spatial fragmentation may contribute to a further increase in such ways of life in the near future.
