UTE WARDENGA, Leipzig : „Kultur“ und
historische Perspektive in der Geographie / ‘Culture’ and
Historical Perspective in Geography
Employing hermeneutical text
interpretation, this paper explores the implications of the usage of the
concept ‘culture’ in geography. First, it will be demonstrated that
the usage of the concept ‘culture’ does not automatically involve
an enhancement of the historical perspective. Second, it will be shown that the
culture-related communication throughout the discipline unfolds its growth
potential especially when it comes down to discussions about rethinking and
shifting research perspectives. Both cases can be put down to the fact that
culture-related communication in geography is largely guided by semantics
connected to the concept ‘culture’ since the late 18th century. This semantics is on the one
hand frequently used in order to put permanence to the present which is always
experienced as fugitive. On the other hand, it is referring to potentials of
change and the exchange of evaluation criteria. It is the aim of this paper to
employ the deconstructivist perspective postulated within the framework of new cultural
geography through the analysis of the concept ‘culture’ and apply
it to cultural geography itself in order to give thought provoking impulses for
a self reflection of the research field.
