The paper discusses different theoretical approaches towards the explanation of regional development paths in transition economies. These approaches are integrated into a conceptional framework that serves as basis for the analysis of the restructuring of the microelectronics industry in Dresden, Saxony, during transformation from a socialist planning economy into a market economy. The paper aims to identify the processes and actors of the transformation process, to analyse the way in which these processes are interconnected and to discuss them in the context of the theoretical concept.
