Cecilia Ricci: In custodiam urbis: Notes on the cohortes
urbanae (1968–2010)
New evidence and recent work on the cohortes urbanae permit
modifications to FreisŐs basic study (1967). Closer examination of the
epigraphic evidence on their deployments and evolution clarifies their original
purpose and changing function, especially their role in frontier campaigns and
distinctions between the cohorts at Rome and those in Lyon and Carthage.
