Aedes Castorum, ludi und praedium
missale: Drei Bemerkungen zur Topographie von Ostia-Portus und zum ager Ostiensis*
A passage in the historian Ammianus Marcellinus has
been used to refute the recent proposal that a temple of Castor and Pollux in
Ostia was located in the river harbour, suggesting instead a location on the
Isola Sacra between Ostia and Portus. This article shows that neither the
language of Ammianus nor a passage in another late-antique literary work, the Cosmographia of
Pseudo-Aethicus, contradict the location in the river harbour. The article
concludes with a discussion of the site Ad
Sextum Philippi between Rome and Portus and of the toponym praedium missale and ponders the
absence of known sites for circus games and spectacles in the Ostia-Portus
area.
