Alexey Miller Natsiia, Narod, NarodnostÕ in Russia in the 19th
Century: Some Introductory Remarks to the History of Concepts
The
article shows that the word natsiia functioned
in the Russian language in the 18th century.
The
concept of narodnostÕ was introduced
in 1820Õs, and had a broad currency during the 1830s–1860s, largely
thanks to its inclusion in UvarovÕs triad. The concepts of nation (natsiia) and natio-nality (natsionalÕnostÕ) were likewise current at the time, but their use and
discussion, especially in the political context, was often restricted by
censorship. It was only by the 1880s that narodnostÕ was finally replaced by the concepts nasiia, nastionalnostÕ and natsionalism.
