E. Munro Catherine Discovers St.
Petersburg
Catherine
II lived many years in St. Petersburg and is responsible for much of its
planning, yet she knew the city only in part. Her personal experience of it was
limited primarily to the ÒofficialÓ city, despite her sponsorship of various
forms of entertainment for St. PetersburgÕs ordinary inhabitants. Police
reports and her own ventures provided her with glimpses of the capital city
that served as nexus for the empire.
