George E. Munro Catherine Discovers St. Petersburg

 

Catherine II lived many years in St. Petersburg and is responsible for much of its planning, yet she knew the city only in part. Her personal experience of it was limited primarily to the ÒofficialÓ city, despite her sponsorship of various forms of entertainment for St. PetersburgÕs ordinary inhabitants. Police reports and her own ventures provided her with glimpses of the capital city that served as nexus for the empire.
