Max J. Okenfuss Catherine, Montesquieu, and Empire

 

Catherine the GreatÕs relationship with Montesquieu has been discussed often, most often in the context of Russian Òdespotism.Ó After a historiographic introduction, this essay addresses a ne-glected connection: CatherineÕs awareness of Russia as a multi-ethnic, multi-religious empire, and of MontesquieuÕs admonitions on such entities where most people are subject to one law, and an-nexed areas to another.
