Max J. Okenfuss Catherine, Montesquieu, and Empire
Catherine
the GreatÕs relationship with Montesquieu has been discussed often, most often
in the context of Russian Òdespotism.Ó After a historiographic introduction,
this essay addresses a ne-glected connection: CatherineÕs awareness of Russia
as a multi-ethnic, multi-religious empire, and of MontesquieuÕs admonitions on
such entities where most people are subject to one law, and an-nexed areas to
another.
