Icons Seen Under Four Aspects

Four scientific disciplines have reached out to come to terms with icons: First of all Slavic

Studies, dominating in the mid-19th century, the the history of art, and finally theology and

history. Until now two scholars have left a deep impact on iconology, i.e. N.P. Kondakov, the

first Russian historian of art, going back to the middle ages and looking at icons in their own

right, not just as pictures dependent on texts. Although the outstanding importance of Novgorod

has been mentioned in abundance, there is no study on this link between east and west.

Novgorod also stands for a fusion between "high" church and “low” folk culture.
