Margherita Palumbo
(Roma): Das schšne supplementum. Die
Privatbibliothek von Leibniz
Leibniz knew
the book market extremely well, and assembled a very extensive library. After his death, on 14th
November 1716, the Hannover government
intended to buy his collection for the Court Library, of which
Leibniz had been librarian since 1676, but it came
into conflict with his nephew and heir, Friedrich Simon Lšffler, regarding
the valuation. For this purpose a commission made two inventories of the books (ca. 8.000), among were a good number of antique and rare editions. The article
will survey these inventories, the structure and the principal features of the collection. In addition, it will show the process
of collecting: Leibniz purchased
books mainly at auctions in Germany, Holland and France, and several volumes were sent to him
by correspondents.
