Irene Dingel (Mainz): Leibniz als Gegengift – Pierre
Bayles Dictionnaire historique et critique im deutschsprachigen Raum*
When Johann
Christoph Gottsched produced the first volume of the German translation of
Pierre BayleÕs Dictionnaire histoirque et
critique in 1741, he could hardly find enough words of praise
for the all-embracing erudition of the French pioneer of the Elightenment, who
had died in 1706, and for the work which he had authored. But he did not ignore
the reflections which were critical of things religious contained in that Dictionary, of which the public
needed to be warned. BayleÕs critical queries were blunted in the Gottsched not
only wove in his own commentary in
notes, but also cited above all Leibniz, whose writings he recommended as
ÒantidoteÓ.
