Martina Becvarova, Jindrich Becvar, Jan Skoda: Emil Weyr und sein italienischer Aufenthalt

Emil Weyr (1848–1894) was an important Bohemian mathematician. His scientific career was strongly influenced by his study tour in Italy in the years 1870–1871, above all by his contact with Luigi Cremona (1830–1903). After his return from Italy he was appointed Extraordinary Professor at the Bohemian Polytechnic Institute in Prague. In 1875 he became Ordinary Professor of mathematics at the university of Vienna. This paper gives a short survey of his life and work and contains extracts from his diary. A detailed description of his stay in Italy, his life and his scientific work is to be found in the monograph that we published in 2006 [J. Be‹v‡Þ, M. Be‹v‡Þov‡, J. Škoda: ãEmil Weyr a jeho pobyt v It‡lii v roce 1870/71Ò, Edition Džjiny matematiky, Band 28, ‰eskŽ vysokŽ u‹en’ technickŽ, Praha, 2006].
