Harald Witthšft: …konomie, WŠhrung und Zahl – Wirtschaftsgeschichte
und historische Metrologie. Ein Literatur- und Forschungsbericht 1980 bis 2007
25 years ago this journal reported on historic-metrological
publications after 1945. Time has changed. Public interest, scientific
questioning and the focus of research in economic history have shifted since.
Nevertheless – today we have a better founded and more diversified
knowledge of historical metrology at our disposal than three decades ago.
Selected publications since 1980 are reviewed under particular aspects of their
economic historical relevance. In commenting the author refers to his own work
and corresponding publications. At Siegen University ÒVolkswagenstiftungÓ and
ÒDeutsche ForschungsgemeinschaftÓ have supported a sequence of
economic-historical projects (1980–2005) finally leading to the editing
of a ÒHandbuch der historischen MetrologieÓ (8 volumes, 1991–2007). Our
research was based on the assumption – and the results do prove it
–, that numerical information back to the early middle ages were rational
and reliable and are comprehensible in metric terms.
