Stefan Burkhardt: Stupentes ob inauditam novitatem – Das ×NeueÒ im Mainzer Erzstift
des 12. Jahrhunderts. Zur Anwendung von Innovationstheorien auf das Mittelalter
The 12th
century is perceived as an era of far-reaching social changes. This article
focusing on the archbishopric of Mayence aims to give answers on the following
questions: How do modern theories reflect upon ÒinnovationÓ? How are innovating
processes structured? What features considered to be promoting or retarding
these processes can be observed? Do equivalent phenomena exist in the Middle
Ages? This analysis proves the great importance of topographical and cultural
spatial structures, the profound rank of collegiate churches and monasteries
accumulating and transferring knowledge, the eminent function of nobility in
order to facilitate the acceptance of inventions and the central position of
the archbishop moderating and coordinating these developments.
