Verwahranstalten mit FantasiegehŠltern? Die Hilfswerklager der SA fŸr
arbeitslose ãalte KŠmpferÒ
The professional
training of the state labour administration did not meet the SAÕs demands.
Therefore, the SA built its own camps for unemployed comrades in 1933, financed
by subsidies from state unemploy-ment insurance funds. While propaganda praised
the Òpurely social purposesÓ of the auxiliary camps, apparently many ÒleadersÓ
and inhabitants profited at the expense of the subsidies, that increasingly
were left uncontrolled. Finally, it seems that the camps were less intended for
professional training than they were about keeping the aggressive SA veterans
off the streets so that the NS leadership was untroubled by their own
supporters.
