Werner Ršsener
Europa im SpŠtmittelalter und die agrarische Welt. Probleme und
Defizite der Forschung
This article is about the different views
of German and European historians on the Late Middle Ages. Analysing a few
important studies the author points out central issues and main developments in
German historical research since 1919, with an emphasis on the theme of the Òcrisis
of the Late Middle AgesÓ. The latest publication of German medievalists
(published in 2006) almost completely ignores the signs of crisis in agrarian
economy and rural society all over Late Medieval Europe. For leading
international scholars, however, themes like population losses, epidemics and
the Great Plague, peasantsÕ revolts and the economic crisis in the Late Middle
Ages play an important role and are intensively discussed in international
studies.
