Zeitschrift fuer Dialektologie und Linguistik
Journal & supplement series
For 120 years, the Zeitschrift fuer Dialektologie und Linguistik (ZDL) has been the leading international publication venue for scholarship related to the linguistic development of German in all of its regional variety and dynamics. It covers the entire field of modern regional language research, including historical, social, pragmatic, and theoretical aspects. The languages of publication are German and English. Quality is assured via a peer review process: After the editorial team has checked the general suitability of submissions, they are assessed by members of the editorial board and by experts in the specific subject areas.
The book series ZDL Beihefte supplements the journal, publishing monographs and conference volumes that correspond to the academic profile.

Publishing information
Please send manuscript submissions to the editors (zdl@staff.uni-marburg.de). Submissions must be original articles (no translations) which must not be previously published. During the review process, manuscripts may not be submitted elsewhere. A manuscript submitted to the journal must be ready for publication, the editors do not accept partial or draft versions. In initial submissions, the citation rules of the journal do not have to be strictly followed. Please pay attention to the anonymization of your text so that your identity as author cannot be ascertained directly or indirectly (e.g. by acknowledgments and self-references in footnotes).
All submissions are subjected to peer review. The review process can result in acceptance, the recommendation of revisions or rejection of the manuscript. The author is informed of the decision by email. The editors attempt to reach a decision within 3 months of the submission of the manuscript.
If a manuscript is accepted, the editors request a file with the final version. The final version includes names and acknowledgments. Also, please follow the guidelines of publisher and editors provided below.
There are no fees for submitting and publishing an article in the journal.

General notes
- Definitions and translations in the running text are placed in single quotation marks above (ʻ…ʼ, 6 and 9).
- Emphasis in the text (e.g. terms or language examples) are indicated by italics.
Contribution header
- General guidelines on the contribution header can be found under ‘Contribution guidelines’.
- The title in the original language is followed by the English translation of the title, unless the title is already in English.
- Articles in the Zeitschrift für Dialektologie und Linguistik include an abstract and keywords in the original language, as well as an abstract and keywords in English.
Abbreviated references in the text
- Every quote needs a reference.
- References are placed directly in the text in brackets. The source is indicated in brackets after the quotation or statement to be substantiated. The short reference follows the author-year principle.
This is a statement that needs to be verified (Louis 1996: 27)
(vgl. Müller 1995: 7) or … like Grundmann (2007: 18–22) showed
in the case of two: (Müller and Meier 1995: 28)
in the case of more than two: (Müller et al. 2017: 36) - If several publications by the same person were published in the same year, they are distinguished from each other by lowercase letters at the end of the year:
Meier (1999a: 5–8).
Meier (1999b: 17–23). - If there are several references within a bracket, please separate the bibliographic details with commas:
(Müller 2011, 2012, Meier 2015) - Please avoid indicating page ranges with ‘f.’ or ‘ff.’ Instead, always specify the exact page range:
(Keitel 2018: 202–203)
(Vasold 2008: 276–288) - Please avoid abbreviations like „ebd.“, „ibid.“ etc.
- Every short reference that is used in the text body needs its according detailed reference within the bibliography.
Bibliography
- The bibliography with detailed source and literature references is located at the end of an article; only the short title is mentioned in the references in the text body.
- The bibliography contains all cited titles and only these. The first level is sorted alphabetically by author, the second by year of publication:

Fischer, Fritz. 2012. Example title. Stuttgart: Steiner.
Schneider, Lisa. 1982. Random title. Stuttgart: Steiner.
Schneider, Lisa. 1986. Example title. Stuttgart: Steiner. - Between main- and subtitle there is always a full stop, never a colon.
- Only the first place of publication is mentioned; for all others, ‘et al.’ is written.
- All authors and editors should be listed in the bibliography (please do not use “et al.”).
- Please ensure that your references are correct and complete. Please also include subtitles and series titles.
