Empirical research on the societal and spatial impacts of global change has concentrated either on rural or urban contexts, especially on megacities. The peri‐urban spaces in between are largely left unnoticed, although experiencing the most profound and dynamic transformations. This book presents the first comprehensive study on spatial dynamics of industrial development and social change in this context, taking peri-urban Chennai, the thriving industrial hub in southern India, as an example.
The book combines quantitative and qualitative findings to analyse the implications of rapid industrialisation: a dynamic land market, changing labour conditions, strained governance structures and the demise of an agrarian social order. In order to systematically approach this transformation an innovative conceptual framework is developed from Lefebvre’s theory of the production of space.
Following the notion of inclusive development the book explores the contested spatial dynamics of development, contrasting strategies of global players with the local struggles of the vulnerable striving for livelihood security in the peri-urban spaces of today.

Sebastian Homm holds a PhD from the Department of Geography at the University of Bonn where he studied geography, environmental economics and soil sciences. His PhD project focused on urbanization, land use change and socio-economic transformation in peri-urban Chennai.. He was also founding member of the Mountain Research Group that established a cooperative research project with partners from Kunming, China, on biodiversity management and environmental governance in Yunnan province.
His research interests are located in the fields of social geography and development studies with a focus on newly industrialized countries. He is concerned with inclusive urban development, dynamics of land use change and the sustainable management of natural resources.

Megastädte gewinnen aufgrund ihrer wachsenden Zahl, enormen Größe und oft rasanten Entwicklungsdynamik als Zentren globalen Wandels immer mehr Bedeutung. Neu sind nicht nur die bisher unbekannten Dimensionen von Flächen- und Bevölkerungswachstum sowie die hohe Konzentration von Bevölkerung, Infrastruktur, Wirtschaftskraft, Kapital und Entscheidungen, sondern auch die Gleichzeitigkeit und Überlagerung der verschiedenartigsten ökologischen, ökonomischen, sozialen und politischen Prozesse – mit vielfältigen wechselseitigen, sich zum Teil selbst verstärkenden Beschleunigungs- und Rückkopplungseffekten. Und neu sind der zunehmende Verlust an Regier- und Steuerbarkeit bei steigender Informalität sowie die Vielzahl und Vielfalt beteiligter Akteure und ihrer Verflechtungen. Die Schriftenreihe Megacities and Global Change / Megastädte und Globaler Wandel untersucht die verschiedenen Aspekte und Herausforderungen weltweiter Megaurbanisierung in unterschiedlichen Regionen. Aus geographischer, raumplanerischer, umweltwissenschaftlicher, soziologischer und politischer Perspektive ergeben sich neue Sichtweisen und ein neues Verständnis megaurbaner Entwicklungsdynamiken. Die Qualität der in der Reihe erscheinenden Arbeiten wird von zwei unabhängigen Gutachtern geprüft.
