The publisher

Berliner Wissenschafts-Verlag has been publishing relevant scientific books and journals for over 60 years. Every year, numerous new publications appear in around 40 series. Several specialist journals regularly publish current research articles, primarily in the fields of law and political science.

The publisher’s program

The publishing house's program focuses on the social sciences and humanities. However, the interdisciplinary orientation also includes the fields of law, politics, economics and public administration, in which numerous renowned publications can be found.

The Berliner Wissenschafts-Verlag has a regional focus on Eastern European law and Eastern European research, Northern European research and the regional history of Berlin, Brandenburg and Prussia. In the latter area, Berliner Wissenschafts-Verlag is one of the leading specialist publishers in Germany.

Publishing history

Founded in 1962 in Berlin-Dahlem as “Berlin Verlag Arno Spitz”, Berliner Wissenschafts-Verlag can look back on a history that has been closely linked to the city of Berlin from the very beginning. Arno Spitz, who returned to Berlin when the Wall was built in 1961, founded the publishing house with the aim of helping to overcome the social and political confrontation between East and West. Accordingly, in the following years he built up his publishing program in the fields of international law and political science – with a particular focus on Eastern European studies and Berlin regional studies.

In 2002, the publishing house was given a new name, which it still bears today: Berliner Wissenschafts-Verlag. The new publishing house management significantly expanded the program, especially in the areas of law and legal history, and set new priorities with the areas of public administration & economics and environment & energy.

In 2011, Berliner Wissenschafts-Verlag took over the Pro Universitate Verlag GmbH as an imprint.

Since 2015, Berliner Wissenschafts-Verlag has belonged to Franz Steiner Verlag in Stuttgart and thus to the Deutscher Apotheker Verlag media group.
