Marco Alviz Fernández


About

Born in Pamplona (Navarra, Spain) in 1987. PhD in Ancient History (with Extraordinary Prize), BA in Geography and History, Master’s degree in Training of Secondary, Professional, and Language Teachers, specialist in Geography and History, Master’s degree in Ancient History “Methods and Advanced Research Techniques on History, Arts and Geography", speciality in Ancient History.

Alviz-Fernandez’ main research lines are Graeco-Roman religion, culture, and society in Late Antiquity (esp. biography and social history of the Neoplatonic school). Currently he is a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Ancient History of Complutense University of Madrid within the Juan de la Cierva Program. He has held previous postdoctoral research and teaching positions at the departments of Ancient History at UNED (Madrid) and the University of La Rioja.

Alviz-Fernandez has done research stays at prestigious European institutions such as the School of History, Classics and Archaeology of the University of Edinburgh, the Historisches Institut of the University of Potsdam, Sapienza University of Rome and the Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski University (Warsaw).

He has also received awards such as the PhD Extraordinary Prize (2020), and two times the prize to the year's best scientific publication (2019 and 2021) granted by UNED; and grants such as the predoctoral fellowship (FPI) at the Department of Ancient History at UNED (2017–2019) as well as the Margarita Salas postdoctoral research stay at Complutense University of Madrid (2022). Finally, he has taken part in several international research projects with public funding and in the frame of one them he directed two international seminars on the concept “theios aner”.
