Hermes

The most important pages in the authors’ area

In our area for authors you will find all the general information you need about structuring your article, formatting your text, working with images and tables and so on. Here we have linked the most important pages for you:
  • Contribution structure
  • Text body
  • Figures and images
  • Tables

On this page

On this page, we have also collected specific information about your journal – e.g. language variants in the article header, the citation guidelines and the required personal details:
  • General notes
  • Contribution header
  • Abbreviated references in the footnotes
  • Detailed references in the bibliography

General notes

  • Latin (not Greek) quotations and expressions should be italicised.
  • Authors of research literature are written in SMALL CAPITALS in both the text and in the notes.
  • When adding your personal details, please put your name in SMALL CAPITALS.
  • Please use small capitals for the words that appear in CAPITAL LETTERS in these guidelines.

Contribution header

  • In addition to the original title, provide an english translation of the main title in bold and in a new line (unless they are already in English). If there is a subtitle, it is also translated into English.
  • There are no abstracts and keywords in the original language for the Hermes. Abstract and Keywords in English are sufficient.

Abbreviated references in the footnotes

  • Sources and references are given in the footnotes in abbreviated form, and the detailed bibliographic information is provided in a bibliography at the end of each contribution (except in the case of miscellanies).
  • An abbreviated reference follows the author-year principle:
FLAIG 2019: 14–15
In the case of two: Flaig, MILLER 2009: 17–21
  • Please avoid using “f.“ or “ff.” for page ranges. Instead, provide the exact page range:
12–13, 78–92
not: 12f., 78ff.
  • For new editions, translations, reprints and such like, the original year of publication should be given first, followed by the year of publication of the cited edition:
HARRISON 1927/2010: 31–35.

Detailed references in the bibliography

  • First names are abbreviated to initials.
  • Details such as edition, volume number, publisher, translator, reprint etc. are given in English.
2nd ed
3 vol
MILLER, M. (ed.)
BECKER, B. (ed./transl.)
transl.
Reprint
  • Multiple people are connected by commas and “and“ before the last name:
In the case of two: MILLER, M. und BECKER, B.
In the case of more than two: MILLER, M., BECKER, B. and MEIER, A.
  • If there are multiple places of publication, they are separated by a slash:
Stuttgart/Weimar
  • Abbreviations of ancient works and ancient authors as well as lexicons and resources of ancient history should be reproduced according to the Neue Pauly or the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae.
  • Please do not use indents in the bibliography.
