General notes

Abbreviated references in the text body

  • Every quote needs a reference.
  • References are placed directly in the text in brackets. The source is indicated in brackets after the quotation or statement to be substantiated. The short reference follows the author-year principle.
This is a statement that needs to be verified (Louis 1996: 27)
(vgl. Müller 1995: 7) or … like Grundmann (2007: 18–22) showed
in the case of two: (Müller and Meier 1995: 28)
in the case of more than two: (Müller et al. 2017: 36)
  • If several publications by the same person were published in the same year, they are distinguished from each other by lowercase letters at the end of the year:
Meier (1999a: 5–8).
Meier (1999b: 17–23).
  • If there are several references within a bracket, please separate the bibliographic details with commas:
(Müller 2011, 2012, Meier 2015)
  • Please avoid indicating page ranges with ‘f.’ or ‘ff.’ Instead, always specify the exact page range:
(Keitel 2018: 202–203)
(Vasold 2008: 276–288)
  • Please avoid abbreviations like „ebd.“, „ibid.“ etc.
  • Every short reference that is used in the text body needs its according detailed reference within the bibliography.

Detailed references in the bibliography

  • The bibliography with detailed source and literature references is located at the end of an article; only the short title is mentioned in the references in the text body.
  • The bibliography contains all cited titles and only these. The first level is sorted alphabetically by author, the second by year of publication:
Fischer, Fritz. 2004. Random title. Stuttgart: Steiner.
Fischer, Fritz. 2012. Example title. Stuttgart: Steiner.
Schneider, Lisa. 1982. Random title. Stuttgart: Steiner.
Schneider, Lisa. 1986. Example title. Stuttgart: Steiner.
  • Between main- and subtitle there is always a full stop, never a colon.
  • Only the first place of publication is mentioned; for all others, ‘et al.’ is written.
  • All authors and editors should be listed in the bibliography (please do not use “et al.”).
  • Please ensure that your references are correct and complete. Please also include subtitles and series titles.
  • Websites and DOIs are indicated in angle brackets both in the body text and in the bibliography. For websites, the date of access must be stated:
