Please send manuscript submissions to the editor-in-chief. Submissions must be original articles (no translations) which must not be previously published. During the review process, manuscripts may not be submitted elsewhere. A manuscript submitted to the journal must be ready for publication, the editors do not accept partial or draft versions. In initial submissions, the citation rules of the journal do not have to be strictly followed. Hermes does not accept manuscripts exceeding 75,000 characters.

All submissions are subjected to peer review. The review process can result in acceptance, the recommendation of revisions or rejection of the manuscript. The author is informed of the decision by email. The editors attempt to reach a decision within 3 months of the submission of the manuscript.

If a manuscript is accepted, the editors request a file with the final version. The final version includes names and acknowledgments. Also, please follow the guidelines of publisher and editors provided below.

There are no fees for submitting and publishing an article in the journal.

Contribution header

• General guidelines on the contribution header can be found under ‘Contribution guidelines’.
• In Hermes, the title in the original language is followed by the English translation of the title, unless the title is already in English.
• Abstract and keywords in English are mandatory. There are no abstracts and keywords in the original language.
  

Special text markups

• Please italicise Latin (not Greek) quotations and expressions.
• The names of authors of research literature in the body text and footnotes should be written in small capitals.
• Please also write your name in small capitals in the biographical details.
• Please use small capitals for words that appear in CAPITAL LETTERS in these guidelines.

Abbreviated references in the footnotes

• Sources and references are given in the footnotes in abbreviated form, and the detailed bibliographic information is provided in a bibliography at the end of each contribution (except in the case of miscellanies).
• An abbreviated reference follows the author-year principle:
  FLAIG 2019: 14–15
  In the case of two: Flaig, MILLER 2009: 17–21
  
• Please avoid using “f.“ or “ff.” for page ranges. Instead, provide the exact page range:
  12–13, 78–92
  not: 12f., 78ff.
  
• For new editions, translations, reprints and such like, the original year of publication should be given first, followed by the year of publication of the cited edition:
  HARRISON 1927/2010: 31–35.
  

Bibliography

• First names are abbreviated to initials.
• Details such as edition, volume number, publisher, translator, reprint etc. are given in English.

• Abbreviations of ancient works and ancient authors as well as lexicons and resources of ancient history should be reproduced according to the Neue Pauly or the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae.
• Please do not use indents in the bibliography.
