This bilingual critical edition is the first and only project to produce a complete scholarly edition of Shakespeare’s plays for the German-speaking world. It offers an English text that is as authentic as possible, with modernised spelling, accompanied by critical notes, as well as a German prose translation that is faithful to both the meaning and the wording of the original. Detailed notes elucidate semantic, stylistic, theatrical and historical contexts. The introductions provide information on textual form, dating, sources, literary background and interpretation, take into account the German-speaking critical tradition and devote particular attention to the history of staging in the German-speaking world. Scene commentaries explore dramaturgical and interpretative issues in greater depth.
