In Encountering Empire, Elisabeth Engel traces how black American missionaries – men and women grappling with their African heritage – established connections in Africa during the heyday of European colonialism. Reconstructing the black American 'colonial encounter,' Engel analyzes the images, transatlantic relationships, and possibilities of representation African American missionaries developed for themselves while negotiating colonial regimes. Between 1900 and 1939, these missionaries paved the way for the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the oldest independent black American institution, to establish a presence in Britain's sub-Saharan colonies. Illuminating a neglected chapter of Atlantic history, Engel demonstrates that African Americans used imperial structures for their own self-determination. Encountering Empire thus challenges the notion that pan-Africanism was the only viable strategy for black emancipation.

The German Historical Institute (GHI) Washington is a center for the advanced study of history. Since 1992, the Institute's book series Transatlantic Historical Studies (THS) has provided a venue for research on transatlantic history and American history from early modern times to the present. Works span the entire range of research fields from political and diplomatic history to gender history, transnational history, and postcolonial history. The THS is a forum for thematic and methodological innovation and it has long been a major platform for German specialists in US and transatlantic history. Manuscripts are peer-reviewed. The series publishes books written in either English or German.

Die Transatlantischen Historischen Studien sind eine Schriftenreihe des Deutschen Historischen Institutes in Washington, DC. Sie veröffentlichen Studien auf dem Gebiet der transatlantischen Beziehungen oder der Nordamerikaforschung von der Frühen Neuzeit bis zur Gegenwart. Die bislang erschienenen Arbeiten reichen von kulturhistorischen über diplomatiegeschichtliche bis zu biographischen Untersuchungen. Historische Vergleiche finden sich ebenso wie detaillierte Fallstudien. Eingehende Manuskripte werden in einem peer review-Verfahren bewertet und von der Redaktion betreut. Eingesendet werden können alle Manuskripte, die sich mit den oben genannten Themenbereichen befassen. Publikationssprachen sind Deutsch und Englisch.
