Indawgyi Lake in Kachin State, located in the northern part of Myanmar, is the largest inland freshwater lake in the country, with rich aquatic flora and fauna, high biodiversity and a (largely) intact ecosystem. Since 1999 the "Indawgyi Wetland Bird Sanctuary" has been declared a conservation area. Still, it is a peripheral region and lagging behind in its development. At present the three main economic activities are agriculture, fishing and gold mining.
Zin Mar Than offers an in-depth analysis of the socio-economic situation of the area and identifies its future development potentials using the SWOT approach (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats). In this context the author discusses concepts of endogenous development and sustainability. Special emphasis is placed on developing ecotourism as a fourth economic activity in the area and to meet the needs of long-term conservation.

Myanmar is located in a geographically pivotal position. The country is undergoing a far-reaching process of opening and transition, causing profound changes that were first visible in the cities and towns but are already having an impact on the situation of the central region and the peripheries. With the foundation of the new capital Nay Pyi Taw the political key location has been shifted to the country’s interior, while the megacity Yangon and the inland metropolis Mandalay are further extending their economic significance. With the opening of the borders, new development corridors are evolving, leading to new connectivities and a deconcentration of the development poles within the country and within Asia. However, this also contributes to growing regional disparities and discrepancies in the pace of development. The peer-reviewed book series investigates past and current developments in the cities and towns as well as the States and Regions of Myanmar from an interdisciplinary perspective. The series aims to deepen scientific knowledge about and in the country and is intended to create a dialogue forum for exchange and discussion about emerging development options.
