Under the influence of a narrowly understood scientific legal positivism, jurisprudence has neglected interdisciplinary research for a long time. However, today there are strong practical and scholarly reasons for an interdisciplinary analysis of law triggered, e.g., by bioethics, life sciences, economics and ecology. And yet the very subject matter of law shimmering between normativity and descriptivity seems to resist all attempts to be taken in by common enterprises across disciplines: How then is the necessary interdisciplinary research in jurisprudence possible without abandoning its core, legal dogmatics?
This question was discussed at a special working group during the IVR-World Congress in Cracow. The papers have been polished and updated for publication. The volume falls into two parts: One is directed at the basic conceptual and institutional questions of interdisciplinary research in jurisprudence; the other one concentrates on one fruitful and highly important field of interdisciplinary research, constitutionalism. The volume brings together a truly international and in itself interdisciplinary group of experts in the field, from Finland to Brazil and from Spain to Greece.
Stephan Kirste, holds a chair for legal and social philosophy at the University of Salzburg, Austria. His research covers all fields of legal philosophy, from history of legal philosophy, theory of jurisprudence and its interdisciplinarity, theory of law (esp. law and time, legal persons) to the ethics of law (theory of justice, human dignity, freedom, human rights, democracy).

Anne van Aaken is the Max-Schmidheiny Tenure Track Professor for Law and Economics, Public, International and European Law at the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland. She holds a Master in Law and in Economics and is admitted to the bar in Germany. She was a Visiting Scholar at UC Berkeley and Yale Law School and a guest professor at several universities in Europe, Latin America, Africa and Asia as well as a Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Study in Berlin in 2010/11. She is the Vice-President of the European Association of Law and Economics, Member of the Programmatic Steering Board of the Hague Institute for the Internationalisation of Law and Member of the ILA Investment Committee and the ILA Committee on Non-State Actors. Her main research areas are international law, (international) legal theory and (behavioural) law and economics.

Michael Anderheiden is Professor at Heidelberg University School of Law and stand in for the chair in legal philosophy and public law at Mainz University. He received his PhD in 2000 from Münster University and was granted the venia legendi by Heidelberg University in 2004. He is a principal investigator in Heidelberg University's interdisciplinary program on Human Dignity, and was a Fellow of the University's Marsilius Kolleg in 2008/9.

Pasquale Policastro is professor of constitutional law and European integration at the Faculty of Law and Administration, University of Szczecin (Poland) and at the Institute of Administration and Public Security, State University of Applied Science, Gorzow Wielkopolski (Poland). He studied law at the Catholic University of the Holy Heart of Milan and received his PhD and habilitation in law at the Catholic University of Lublin "John Paul II". He is co-founder and co-director of the European Master in "Law and Policies of European Integration: European Constitutional Law and Multilevel Constitutionalism", and of the inter-university research network in European Constitutional and Comparative Law "ECONET". His fields of interest include: Comparative Constitutional Law, European Constitutional Law, Theory of the Constitution, Human Rights, Philosophy of Law.

Das Archiv für Rechts- und Sozialphilosophie sieht seine Aufgabe in der philosophischen Grundlagenforschung der Rechtswissenschaft: Die Studien beleuchten und diskutieren die geistigen Grundlagen des Sozial- und Rechtslebens in ihren Verflechtungen und Auswirkungen. Alle Denkrichtungen der Gegenwart werden hierbei bedacht. Ein besonderer Wert wird dabei auf die Internationalität gelegt.
Die Zeitschrift wurde 1907 unter dem Namen Archiv für Rechts- und Wirtschaftsphilosophie gegründet, die erste Beiheft-Reihe erschien von 1908–1932.
1933 erfolgte die Umbenennung in Archiv für Rechts- und Sozialphilosophie. Auch die Beihefte liefen nun bis 1941 unter dem neuen Namen. Ab 1960 ging es mit einer Neuen Folge weiter. Deren erste vier Bände wurden im Luchterhand Verlag publiziert, mit Band 5 erfolgte der Wechsel zum Franz Steiner Verlag. Mittlerweile sind über 100 Beihefte erschienen, u.a. mit den Tagungsbänden der Internationalen Vereinigung für Rechts- und Sozialphilosophie.
